Michigan Sex Crimes, Domestic Violence and DUI Defense
If you think about it, the most important right you have is the right to be presumed innocent unless proven guilty. None of your other rights really matter if you don't have this fundamental right. Otherwise, if the government disagreed with you and charged you with a crime, you would have to prove that you were innocent.
I am Grand Rapids criminal law attorney James K. Champion. I defend people who are accused of crimes ranging from DUI/OUI to capital murder. While my law office is in Grand Rapids, I represent criminal defendants throughout west Michigan, including Battle Creek, Holland and Kalamazoo.
Protect Your Rights: Don't Talk to Police
The best advice I can give somebody is to consult with an attorney before speaking with a detective or other police officer. Many people think they will avoid criminal charges if they can just explain their side of the story to the police or the prosecutor. Actually, talking to law enforcement is like walking into quicksand. Once the state has decided to charge you with a crime, and the odds are very high that they have if they want to talk to you, it isn't interested in proving your innocence. The police officer's job is to arrest you and the prosecutor's job is to prove you guilty. Anything you say or do could give the state the evidence it needs to convict you.
If you are accused of a crime, the police and the prosecutor won't protect your right to be presumed innocent. Only your defense attorney will.
