If you have been accused of rape, you will need someone to step in between you and the authorities and fight to protect your rights. With your future and your reputation at stake, you should hire a skilled lawyer to battle for you as soon as possible.
As a Grand Rapids criminal defense attorney, I, James K. Champion, have been protecting the rights of the accused of many years. If you have been charged with rape or statutory rape in western Michigan, I offer a free initial consultation to discuss your case, explain your options, set expectations and start building a defense against your charges.
Statutory Rape Defense
Regardless of whether sex was consensual, if it occurs with someone under 16 in Michigan, it is a crime. Further, taking sexual photographs of individuals under the age of 18 can result in federal sex crime charges.
With experience in both federal and state court, I can help protect you at all levels of your statutory rape case.
Should You Talk To The Police? No.
Many people contact me after the police have asked them to come to the station for an interview. Should you go if you are asked? The answer is no.
You may think that not talking to the police will make you look guilty. Unfortunately, in the eyes of the police, you already are guilty. Talking to police could only make things worse by providing them with evidence they don’t have.
Police officers, and the public as a whole, tend not to believe people who are accused of sex crimes. For the police, it’s a matter of job preservation. As a result of the Michigan Crime Victim’s Rights Act, police and prosecutors don’t talk about “alleged” rape victims anymore. Rape victims tend to be believed. Think about it. If the accused has the right to be presumed innocent, then shouldn’t the “victim” be referred to as the “alleged victim” until a verdict in the case is reached?
The police don’t care about your right to be presumed innocent. Only your defense attorney does. As your lawyer, I will investigate the alleged victim’s story and background and make sure your side of the story is told.
